There are many objects you can decorate. You can decorate metal surfaces, tins, buckets, vases, glass, doors, furniture, wooden surface or walls. The thing is, you can decorate virtually any object of your choice.
Moreover, this is a better and creative way to recycle old papers. You don't have to spend so much to start your decoupage paper craft projects. You can easily obtain the decoupage supplies from any crafts and arts shops. And they are relatively cheap.
How To Prepare Decoupage Surfaces
To use any surface for decoupage, you'll need to make sure that the surface is clean, dry and smooth.
Cutting Out Papers For Decoupage Projects
It depends totally on what shapes you want your object to have. For example, if you are cutting out leaves or flowery shapes, you'll have to know what type of flower shapes you want to use in the decoupage design.
Use scissors to cut out the decoupage shapes or if you prefer, you can use craft knife.
How To Stick Decoupage Shapes In Position
You'll need a PVA glue that has not been diluted with water to stick the decoupage shapes down. If you want to cut and stick down larger pieces, it is better to use scissors, and for delicate or smaller cut-out shapes, you can use tweezers as it is easy to pick up cut out shapes and position them on the surface.
Add extra glue where you think needs it and make sure all shapes are glued to the surface well. You can cover the stuck down shapes with slightly damp clothe. And to remove bubbles from the surface and make it to look flat, you can use a roller to press the stuck down decoupage.
How To Varnish Stuck Down Decoupage
You can use any household paintbrush to apply the varnish. Make sure that the pieces of cut out decoupage paper dry very well before you paint the varnish. Use about two to 20 coats to varnish the surface and allow them to dry in an open space that is dust free.
The decoupage trick is, if you apply more coats of varnish on the stuck down decoupage, the more the surface will look and feel smoother.
You can also use a non toxic polyurethane wood varnish or use a diluted one part PVA glue with two parts water to varnish. You can paint two varnishes together to achieve a decorative cracked effect.
